Dr. Adnan E. Khoury

In their own words

Get to know Dr.

Dr. Adnan E. Khoury is a Los Angeles–based psychiatrist with more than 20 years of clinical experience and subspecialty focus in addiction psychiatry, sleep medicine, and integrative psychiatry. He has served as Believe Detox Center’s attending physician since 2021, overseeing resident medical care and conducting the intake assessments that determine each resident’s appropriate level of detoxification care.

Dr. Khoury has held an active California medical license since 1999 and treats patients in English, Spanish, and Arabic.

Clinical Focus

  • Addiction psychiatry. Assessment and medical management of alcohol, opioid, stimulant, and benzodiazepine use disorders, including withdrawal risk evaluation and level-of-care determination.
  • Co-occurring mental health conditions. Depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric conditions that frequently drive or accompany substance use, addressed alongside detox rather than deferred until after it.
  • Sleep medicine. Sleep disruption is one of the most common and destabilizing symptoms of early withdrawal. Dr. Khoury’s subspecialty training in sleep medicine informs how BDC manages rest and stabilization during a resident’s first days.
  • Integrative psychiatry. A whole-person approach combining medication management with behavioral and lifestyle interventions — consistent with BDC’s philosophy that detox alone does not treat addiction.

Education & Training

  • Medical Degree — Eugenio María de Hostos University
  • Post-Doctoral Fellowship — Stanford University Program (1999–2001)
  • Residency, Psychiatry — Medical College of Georgia (1994–1997)
  • Residency, Internal Medicine — Medical College of Georgia (1997–1999)
  • Residency, Internal Medicine — Morehouse School of Medicine (1992–1994)

Dr. Khoury’s dual training in psychiatry and internal medicine is directly relevant to residential detox, where psychiatric symptoms and medical withdrawal risks must be evaluated together.

Licensure

  • California Medical License — Active since 1999 (current through 2027)
  • NPI: 1023101888
