Whether overcoming substance use disorder or alcohol use disorder, mindfulness is key in the new year. Here is a list of things people in recovery like myself need to watch out for in 2025.

First is triggers. We need to identify the situations, people and places that may cause cravings or negative thoughts. If it’s not good for your sobriety or peace of mind, it simply should hold no place in your life. The next thing is your support system. Make sure you have a strong support system in place if you don’t already. This could include family, friends, support groups or more. Those in your support system should support your sobriety over all.

Next is self care practices. Prioritize your physical and mental health by excercising, proper nutrition and mindfulness practices. A good hike in the outdoors always does the trick for me. Don’t forget to set goals this year as well. It feels good to accomplish things in recovery and gives you something to work towards which is key. Idle time can lead to relapse for some and often in recovery, we need to find positive and constructive things to do with our time.

Don’t forget to be mindful of your stress management. Be aware of potential stressors and things that can agitate you. Develop coping skills for when stressful moments do come. We must develop new ways to deal with these moments other than running for a substance to numb us temporarily. Another key thing to be mindful of is to avoid temptation. Simply stay away if you can from any events and environments that may have substance use going on. There are plenty of places to find enjoyment, etc where substance use is not present.

The next two on the list is routine maintenance and celebrating your successes. Create a daily routine thst includes recovery activities and a time for reflection. Also, and I’m big on this…celebrate you! Whether the moment is big or small. If it is a positive accomplishment, you need to celebrate you. You deserve it!

Continual education is key when it comes to your recovery as well. Keep yourself informed about recovery strategies and resources. Attend events if you can as well. Right behind that, we have mindfulness and reflection. Take time to write down what allowed you to be successful and what didn’t work when it came to your recovery last year. It’s important to take note.

Seeking professional help is key. If needed, don’t hesitate. Your sobriety and your life could depend on it. Counseling or therapy is beneficial when it comes to moving forward and processing things that could stunt our ability to grow in recovery. Last, but not least…make sure to engage in recovery activities. This could mean meetings, events and more. Anything that will reinforce your recovery.
