Being in long term recovery, I can tell you firsthand that the road we travel while living in sobriety will pose different obstacles. That’s why I wanted to take the timeout to discuss some of the things we face. These are the challenges we’ll encounter, but it’s important to note that these challenges can be overcome.

First on the list is Cravings and Triggers. Intense cravings can occur and reminders of past negative behaviors can become hard to manage when they arise. Taking the time to identify potential triggers an be helpful when proactively trying to avoid them. Still it is difficult to avoid these things in certain social situations and stress filled environments.

Those who once battled substance use issues in the past can also experience Emotional Struggles. From anxiety to depression, anger or more…these emotions can be difficult to deal with while not resorting to subtances. New strategies have to be applied so old habits don’t resurface.

The next one is Relapse. Rightfully so this is a concern for people who once battled substance use disorder and especially those who may have recently just went through detox. People sometime experience setbacks and it’s important to note that recovery is a marathon and not a sprint. We build resilience overtime as we continue down the path.

Building a new lifestyle can be difficult as well for those of us in Recovery. New daily routines, hobbies and establishing healthier relationships are all key when it comes to maintaining sobriety. Doing all of these things can be daunting especially while taking those first steps into a new chapter.

Of course we can’t forget the social pressures that come with sobriety. Sometimes those who choose not to drink can be singled out. Not to mention pressures to use substances or take a drink may come from a loved one. It can become difficult to navigate certain social environments. Find positive social environments that support your sobriety.

Last, but not least…financial and employment issues can be triggering for a person in recovery. Economic pressures and changes can lead to stresses that may trigger set back. Money matters at times and is also one of the top top things people stress over whether in recovery or not.

While I wanted to take the time to list all of these different obstacles we face while in recovery, it is important to note that you can push past them maintain a sober lifestyle. Be proactive and prepared as much as possible. Your sobriety depends on it!
