It is imperative to discuss how one can set goals and accomplish them while in recovery. Goal setting is key when it comes to the recovery journey because it helps an individual build a healthy lifestyle needed to go forward. Here as I get into this blog for this week I asked that you all reflect on one personal goal that you have accomplished and the steps that it took to get there.
There are many types of goals and in this paragraph we will discuss them and their important role when it comes to personal development. When it comes to goals, they can be either short-term or long-term. They can be either personal or professional. All of these goals, especially when it comes to an individual that’s in recovery should provide not just direction with motivation to continue down a successful path in life. Also establishing goals helps an individual track progress and allows them to celebrate achievements.
A good way to set goals is to establish and utilize the smart goals framework. Smart is an acronym that can be broken down in the letters. SMARTS stands for specific, which means to clearly define the goal. M stands for measurable, which means to identify how success will be measured. A is achievable, which means to ensure the goal is realistic, and attainable our stands for relevant, which means to align the goal and personal values and long-term objectives. T stands for time bound, which means set a deadline for achieving the goal. Utilizing this framework can help not just establish but achieve goals that you desire to accomplish.
In regard to certain steps that one can take when setting an achieving goals while in recovery they are as follows… First one should identify personal values. This is important because aligning goals with personal values ultimately leads a person to a place of peace. Next, you should write down goals, this helps establish accountability and if nothing more a visible framework. After that, break the goals down. Larger goals can be broken down into smaller steps or goals. Do this to allow the pathway to become easier and more manageable. Then create an action plan in other words, outline the steps needed in order to accomplish the goals. Lastly, monitor progress.
Overcoming obstacles in goal setting while in recovery is so important. Individuals and recovery can experience certain things along their journey when striving to accomplish goals. Fear of failure, lack of support, and internal resistance are all things that people in recovery often face and believe it or not setting certain specific goals, especially when it comes to maintaining a good level of self-care can help prepare yourself for when these obstacles come about.
